Chow Sang Sang Fears Impact of Trade War | The Jewelry Magazine

Image
Hong Kong-based jeweler Chow Sang Sang warned that trade tensions may impact its earnings for the remainder of 2018, even after first-half sales grew. “Though the results of the first half of 2018 looked encouraging, the impact of international trade disputes, the effect of [the US Federal Reserve’s June] interest-rate increase as well as currency revaluation may take their toll in [the second half],” the company said Monday. Diplomatic tensions between the US and China have led to volatile stock markets and exchange rates this year, the retailer said. The Chinese yuan weakened against the Hong Kong dollar in the second quarter, potentially restricting the spending power of tourists from the mainland visiting Hong Kong. Chinese economic growth is also slowing, while global conditions could create further challenges in the coming months, Chow Sang Sang added. Sales increased 19% to $1.22 billion (HKD 9.56 billion) for the six months ending June 30 as consumer sentiment remai...

The Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA’s) publication Gems & Gemology in its Summer 2018 volume has a report on the strange case of one single natural diamond found mongst a batch of 1,102 HPHT synthetic melee. The report, co-authored by Stephanie Persaud, Wuyi Wang, Paul Johnson, and Ivana Petriska Balov, sketching in the background, noted: “Over the last decade, the production methods used to create synthetic diamond melee have improved substantially, along with the quality of the specimens themselves. The increase in the amount of synthetic melee submitted—both disclosed and undisclosed—to GIA’s laboratories for identification has exponentially increased since GIA began offering its Melee Analysis Service in 2016.” The report further said that parcels of melee which are submitted often contain a mixture of naturals and synthetics. “Typically, a few synthetics are detected in batches of natural melee diamonds, known in the trade as “salting”,” the report stated. ...

US retail sales increased in July, as consumers continued to spend despite fears over the escalating trade war. Online and other non-store sales climbed 11.3% year on year, the NRF noted. “[The] numbers mirror the economy, which is in very good shape,” NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz said last week. “Consumer fundamentals remain healthy and continue to provide wherewithal for consumers to drive domestic economic growth.” The positive trend was also noted in the earnings reports of various department stores for the second quarter, which closed at the end of July, with jewelry listed among the growth products. “The retail environment remained strong in the first half of the year,” said Jeff Gennette, Macy’s CEO. “Sales were buoyed by strong consumer sentiment and ...

Unique Origin of Blue Diamonds Uncovered | The Jewelry Magazine

Image
A natural fancy dark greyish-blue diamond, the Hope diamond is one of the most famous in the world. Photo by Robert Weldon © GIA. Courtesy of Smithsonian Institution. Blue diamonds are renowned as one of the rarest of fancy colour diamonds mainly due its formation and exceptional hue. A new industry research shows blue diamonds may get their colour from a surprising source: The element boron. According to a new research featured on the cover of international scientific journal Nature, blue diamonds form at extreme depths – approximately four times deeper than most diamonds. The element boron, contained in the floors of ancient oceans carried deep into the earth’s mantle by the movement of tectonic plates, supplies the diamond’s blue colour. This was the first study to examine and identify the mineral inclusions in very rare and valuable blue diamonds. Analysing those inclusions demonstrated that the diamonds formed at great depth in the presence of sunken, or “subducted,” a...

WASHINGTON: The Hope Diamond, a rare blue diamond that is one of the world’s most famous jewels, has had a complicated history, passing through the hands of monarchs and bankers and heiresses and thieves before landing for all to see at a Washington museum. The geological history of blue diamonds is even more complex, according to research published on Wednesday examining these exceptionally scarce and valuable gems. Scientists analyzed 46 blue diamonds, including one from South Africa that sold for $25 million in 2016, and determined that they can form at depths of at least 410 miles (660 km), reaching into a part of the Earth’s interior called the lower mantle. Tiny mineral fragments trapped inside them provided clues about the birthplace of the diamonds. Blue diamonds comprise only about 0.02 percent of mined diamonds but inc...
